Eagles need foreign coach —Sen. Adefuye
environment to succeed while in charge of the Eagles.
“Nigerians learn more from foreigners; they respect and obey them. Even if the foreigner is not as good as the Nigerian coach, they will do anything he says they should do. It’s our mentality. My advice is that they should hire a foreign coach and a Nigerian assistant. If our coaches are good, they should go and coach outside,” Adefuye said.
“In football, we are behind now. We are 63, whereas we were once rated fifth in the world. Football today is not mere competition; it’s an economic investment. We must invest to reap in it. When we were investing in it and had foreign coaches, we were on top. Now they brought in indigenous coaches and we started going down.”
He said the use of foreigners as coaches is a global norm, adding that since Nigeria resorted to indigenous coaches for the Eagles, the country’s footballers have experienced a poor run of form in recent years.
Adefuye added, “Even England, where football started from, uses foreign coach. In Africa, the small countries which use foreign coaches are the ones who beat us. They beat us easily because of the coaching element of the game.
“Nobody will buy any player from you, when they know that your coach is not good. America hired a German and England once had a Swede in charge. But we have a Nigerian coach and that’s the reason why we are 63rd today, which means we are nowhere in football. Who will value a player from a country that is 63rd in the world? That’s why you see our players being sold to Egypt or Algeria; these are countries that are not better than us.
“So, we must get a foreign coach that is recognised, like we did before, and you will see how our team will go up again. If we don’t do that, we are playing with the future of our footballers.”
