There was confusion on Abule Nla Road in the Iponri area of Lagos when hoodlums clashed along the railway crossing, during which a middle-aged man, identified simply asJogi, was hacked to death.
PUNCH Metro learnt that two factions of the hoodlums had faced one another at the railway crossing at about 5pm on Tuesday, during which Jogi was killed.
The victim, who was said to belong to a faction, lived in Ilogbo in the Ebute Meta area.
Our correspondent learnt that after Jogi was killed, the hoodlums took his corpse away to an unknown destination.
It was gathered that policemen from the Iponri Police Division and the Area C Police Command, Surulere, later came to the area to restore normalcy.
When PUNCH Metro visited the area on Thursday, a shop owner, who declined to give his name, said the police had not found Jogi’s corpse, adding that most of the hoodlums were still on the run.
He said, “The hoodlums fought one another on Tuesday at about 5pm. There was commotion in this area. The deceased was particularly targeted. They cut him with cutlasses and also escaped with his corpse.
“Olaleye Street is another violence-prone area. The thugs continue to regroup and attack other groups. They go as far as Oyingbo, Fadeyi, Ilogbo and old Apapa Road to attack whoever is their target.”
A police source told our correspondent that policemen from the Iponri division had apprehended one of the suspected killers.
He said, “The Iponri division has picked up one of them. We are on the lookout for the others. The hoodlums have fled the area at the moment. It is when they observe that the hunt for them has subsided that they will return for fresh violence. That is their culture.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nowsu, confirmed the clash, adding that the police had restored normalcy to the area.
He said, “There was a breach of peace in the area, and our men responded. They are on top of the situation. I do not have any information of death.”
